BDSM 101: What Is Sub Space and How Do I Manage It?
Sub space is an all-encompassing term that applies to subs, bottoms, puppies, kittens and more; sometimes even tops get this feeling.
What happens to our minds when we drink or do drugs? For a lot of us, we get a euphoric feeling, we feel otherworldly, that’s why we keep doing it time and time again. We keep chasing that feeling because we like it.
What is Sub Space?
Sub-space works the same kind of way, except it is our body doing the chemical changes and feelings, not substances or intoxicants. Sub space happens because during a play our body releases lots of feel-good chemicals; dopamine, adrenaline, serotonin etc. they get released in massive amounts very fast and our body and mind goes into a sort of altered state, we can feel out of body, otherworldly, kind of drunk and spacey (hence the name).
How Common Is It?
Not all subs or bottoms feel this or sometimes they don’t feel it every time. I know for me I try to keep my spaciness to a minimum if I play at a public event, I like to keep my wits about me and be engaged in the event; so I don’t play to the level of getting spacey in public. I save that for private plays, with somebody I trust and where I can let go of controlling my mind.
Sub space normally happens during or immediately after a play session. Sub drop is what can happen later as a result of a play, sub space and those feel-good chemicals.
Is It Safe?
Safety is something to remember here as well, as I said earlier, I try to not space at public events. This is also because of my safety, when you are spacey it can be like you’re drunk, you might not make the best decisions and you might not have a good awareness of what’s happening around you. If you don’t have trusted people around you protecting you, there is a chance of somebody taking advantage of your position. While this is few and far between, I prefer to keep my head in check just in case.
Sub space can be an amazing feeling and is something most subs/bottoms look for in plays. Whether it’s rope play, needle play, impact play or something else. Sub space can happen to any bottom, sometimes it just takes time to trust somebody, to trust yourself and to let go to allow it to happen. And remember that while sub space feels great, it’s not the be-all and end all of a play scene. Enjoy the ride.
