Workshop summary
When bottoms ask their tops about what they’re meant to do in BDSM play, they often get told: ‘Just enjoy it!’ But bottoming skills are real and varied, and we can make meaningful differences to our experiences.
It’s difficult to explain what bottoms are doing when so many of their skills are invisible to observers—be it their preparation before play, their negotiation, assessing risk, communicating, opening themselves to sensation or expressing themselves truly. Bottoms can wind up having to learn lessons through experience, and sometimes the lessons come too late.
This workshop is a deep dive into all the practical skills you’ll need to develop your bottoming skills, from the basics in negotiation and perceiving risks during play, to the more abstract skills in processing pain, knowing how to communicate ideas, and deepening your kink fantasies.
With concepts applied to a range of styles including rope, impact, wax play, needle play, and knife play*, you’ll build practical skills for the play that you love. Beginners will have a vast download of ideas to prepare them for play, and experienced bottoms can gain further insights on how they can get the most out of their experiences.
Go deeper, know your worth, and find beautiful new ways to enjoy your bottoming journey.
Learning outcomes
- Understanding bottoming as a role and how to negotiate expectations unique to you and your partnership
- Building more nuanced skills in aftercare and in preparation for play
- Gaining insights into basic indications of skill level when choosing a top (and more importantly, if it lines up with how the top describes their own capability!)—as well as identifying good personal qualities in a top, and in your compatibility.
- Identifying risk and safety factors from a bottom’s perspective, understanding how it might look and feel in multiple play styles, including rope play, impact, wax play, needle play, and knife play.
- Responding to a top’s communication, how to follow movement in rope or more physical play without resisting or rushing ahead, and while reducing risk.
- Building skills in processing pain and assessing ‘good vs bad pain’, both physical and psychological.
- Gaining a deeper understanding of subspace and how it works, how you can lean into it if you want to, and how you can mitigate the potential for subdrop.
- Introduction to ideas around ‘cooperative bottoming’, playing as a participant rather than an audience member, and working as a team with your top to have incredible play experiences.
- Methods for letting go with a trusted top, ways of exploring yourself and expressing yourself truly in play.
- Building a fantasy: Understanding the three layers of reality which overlap in fantasy-based play, and how you can suspend your disbelief and fall deeper into the kinky narratives that you hold inside you.
Bio
Symphonie has spent almost 4 years practising kink as both top and bottom in a range of styles, including shibari, impact, needle play, wax play and knife play. With a particular fondness for bondage and torture fantasies, she enjoys authentic emotion and exploring both the light and darkness in a person’s heart.
For the last two years Symphonie has also assisted in facilitating private kink parties and educational events. She has an ongoing passion for bottoming education—and in moving beyond the basics to illuminate more complex and abstract bottoming skills.
*Demonstrations will be applied only to rope, impact and physical play, and no blood will be drawn.
